Artist's Comments

...a homage to Paul Nicklen.

In my profile, I state "The great guys at National Geographic" as my favourite photographers. And indeed, I think that this magazine has not only some real good writers, but the world's best photographers, too.

Together, they with every new article and photo take me to places I'll most probably never see, and explain things I'd probably never hear of otherwise. If there is an inspiration for me to go out, explore the world and all it's creatures, then it's National Geographic, of which's German edition I'm a first hour subscriber.

And if among all those photographer-heros of NG I were to name one whose name stands out among the others and who'd be a great representative of this group of phantastic artists, then it'd be Paul Nicklen [link] several time World Press Photo Award winner. (If you go there, make especially sure to check out the polar bear and leopard seal photos - these are just plain phantastic.)

So when :icontrish2: in her contest asked for artwork expressing what inspires us, NG and Paul Nicklen came to my mind.

So here it is, the entire world and beyond in handpicked issues of NG Germany - and at it's core, in its center, just a snippet of the work and art of Paul Nicklen. Thank you for inspiring me, Mr Nicklen!

Winning entry to :icontrish2:'s "Inspiration"-contest.

I totally love this... I wish I had this extensive collection of National Geographics! :) Great idea! Great composition... it rocks. Trust me I'm always right.

Thanks a lot for the praise - I really appreciate it. I was (and still am) not overly satisfied with the outcome, but hey...if the two of you say it's not entirely crappy, I'm bound to believe you ;-)

I have been a subscriber to NG ever since they first published for the first time in Germany back in 1999. 12 issues a year, almost ten years...yeah, quite an accumulation of great magazines (although some are missing - I suspect my in-laws of having them). The hard part was choosing which to use for this ;-)

But my first contact with the yellow frame was even earlier, about 1992 or 93, when my brother had lived in the States for the first time (half a year of US high shool in Indiana) and brought some US issues back with him. Even though my English wasn't very well back then (being a 7th or 8th grader), I instantly fell in love - because of the photos!
